Is overdraft protection right for me?

Overdraft protection is a short-term safeguard in case you spend more than the balance in your chequing account, up to a pre-arranged limit. It gives you peace of mind, knowing you’re protected from costs like non-sufficient funds (NSF) fees or returned cheques.

With overdraft protection you’ll be charged a standard interest rate, but only on the funds you use. Repayment is easy—as soon as you make a deposit to your chequing account, it will be applied to the overdrawn balance.

¹A full-time post-secondary student will be defined as someone taking 18 credit hours or three full courses per semester. To take advantage of the Student Digital chequing account benefits, you will need to provide proof that you are enrolled full-time at a secondary or post-secondary institution each academic year prior to November 30th. If we do not receive confirmation, the account will be converted to the ACU Digital chequing account in the month of December.

How do I open an ACU chequing account?

Opening an ACU chequing account is easy! If you’re already a member, sign into online banking or your ACU mobile app anytime to open your new chequing account. (You can also visit us at any ACU branch to open an account!)

If you’re not yet a member, join us digitally or visit us in-branch to create your new membership.

Can I open a chequing account for my child?

The ACU Youth account is a great option to help build good banking habits early! Whether your child needs an account for their everyday banking needs — like paying for lunch or the movies — or somewhere to deposit their pay from their first job, the ACU Youth account offers all the features of our ACU Digital account, with no monthly fee while they are under 18.

Youth ages 12 to 17 can be the sole owner of their ACU Youth account. Children under 12 can benefit from this account too, but a parent or legal guardian is required to be their joint account holder.

Do I need to keep a minimum balance in my chequing account?

You’re not required to keep a minimum balance in your ACU chequing account. However, with some types of ACU chequing accounts, we’ll waive the monthly fee and select transaction fees when you keep your balance above a certain amount each month.

How do I qualify for an ACU Student Digital account?

You must be a full-time student enrolled in either secondary or post-secondary school. For post-secondary, this means you’re taking 18 credit hours or three courses per semester.

You’ll need to provide proof of enrollment such as an invoice or receipt of payment or deposit for tuition, a proof of enrollment letter from the Office of the Registrar,  a copy of your timetable or a transcript. 

High school students need to provide their school ID card, clearly displaying their name, school name and year.

To take advantage of Student Digital benefits once you have your chequing account, you will need to provide proof of full-time enrolment before November 30 each academic year. If no proof is provided, we will automatically convert the account to an ACU Digital account in December.

How does ACU keep my chequing account safe?

Our digital banking system has robust fraud prevention and cybersecurity features in place—including 256-bit TLS encryption on our desktop website and mobile app—so you can bank easily and securely from your phone, tablet or computer.

You can also sign into online banking or the ACU app at any time to change or update your security alerts. These are the notifications we’ll send you when certain activities or transactions occur in your account.

As an additional level of online account security, we ask that you log in to your ACU chequing or other account at least once every 120 days—via online banking or the mobile app. If you don’t, your account will be locked and you will need to contact us to have your password reset. This important security feature helps protect members who don’t use online or digital banking very often.
