Background

Now in its 14th year, Canada's Greenest Employers is an editorial competition that recognizes employers that lead the nation in creating a culture of environmental awareness. Winning employers, selected by editors of Canada's Top 100 Employers, are evaluated using four main criteria:
  1. unique environmental initiatives or programs they have developed;
  2. whether they have been successful in reducing their environmental footprint;
  3. whether their employees are involved in these programs and contribute unique skills;
  4. and whether their environmental initiatives have become linked to the employer's public identity, attracting new employees or customers.

ACU’s unique environmental initiatives and programs

ACU is well known in Manitoba for its commitment to environmental sustainability and climate action and it’s woven into its corporate culture. Organizational initiatives such as a green procurement strategy and in-house waste reduction programs and audits led by an employee Eco Excellence Team are just some of the actions taken by ACU to better the planet today and for future generations. Many of the environmental sustainability programs and initiatives at ACU have been recognized over the years and have won awards including the Canadian Credit Union Association Sustainability Award in 2017.

Reducing our environmental footprint

In 2018, ACU was the first credit union in Manitoba to become carbon neutral, and the first Canadian organization to purchase Fairtrade carbon offsets.

Recognized locally

ACU has also received local awards for its green and active commuting program, its climate change and greenhouse gas reduction efforts and support for regional environmental organizations.

Alongside that, ACU has won four golds and a silver in the Green Action Centre’s Commuter Challenge. Employee engagement in this challenge is outstanding, with an average of over 35% of employees participating annually.

Committed to environmental sustainability

ACU’s commitment to the triple bottom line of people, planet and prosperity is evident and they’re proud to be recognized for its efforts of incorporating environmental values into its corporate culture.
